Emerging artist Desrie Thomson-George will be exhibiting her thought provoking collection of sculptures and works titles ‘Liberated’ next month, 5-8 July at The Art Academy, London.
Her works will form her critical response to the social, cultural and political awareness of her existence as a black woman born in Guyana (South America) and the effects of being brought up in the UK, in an area in London where her family were the only black people in the neighbourhood and Desrie the only black child in her primary school.
The artist’s collection of life-size sculptures and installation is set to be an emotive showcase focusing on art for empowerment to provoke dialogue and affect change. Drawing on her own experience of growing up in the UK, Thomson-George tells the story of her alter ego, Jilo, her struggles and journey to survival. Desrie’s impassioned presentation of Jilo’s invisibility while being visible, and the irony of this is perceptive. ‘Liberated’ challenges preconceived conceptions and stereotypes of the black woman in the West. The artist works with recycled metal, glass, paper and textiles, sometimes pressed into jesmonite and plaster moulds, to reflect the complexities of Jilo’s experience and who she is.
“I believe I am descended from a long line of storytellers or West African ‘Griots’ – someone who passes on their society’s history, especially through stories, poems, and music. Because for as long as I can remember, stories have been recounted vividly around me, usually with a moral message. They continue to play a significant role in my life.” Desrie Thomson-George
As I write this I have also decided that Desrie is certainly my #WomanCrush for June! Her story and journey from childhood is touching and she’s always strived to be an accomplished, creative and determined woman. Her upcoming show also presnts her truth and is one not to be missed! #Liberated
